Recently, significant changes have been made to the International System of Units (SI), introducing four new prefixes and redefining the names of existing units. This article takes a deep dive into these developments and explores the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in shaping the future of data storage.

The New Units: Representatives from governments worldwide gathered at the General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM) in November 2022 to address the need for new units to express extremely large and small quantities. As a result, the prefixes “ronna” (R) and “quetta” (Q) were introduced to represent 1027 and 1030, respectively. Additionally, the prefixes “ronto” and “quecto” were adopted to denote values of 10−27 and 10−30.
